Discover how a collaborative initiative between Milford Public Schools, the Community Foundation for MetroWest, Saga Education, and Life Science Cares Boston is redefining educational equity and student achievement.
After achieving promising results in Framingham Public Schools through the Foundation’s Equity in Education Action Project, developed in partnership with Literations, the Foundation was empowered to expand the program into Milford Public Schools. Guided by local data from Impact MetroWest, the Foundation and its partners identified a significant gap in math achievement among middle school students.
In response, Milford’s Math Tutoring Club was launched during the 2024–25 school year. Virtual volunteers, coordinated by Life Science Cares Boston and trained in Saga Education’s online platform, Saga Connect, were matched with students to deliver effective and equitable high-impact tutoring to all students in a cost-effective, scalable way, proving that even smaller districts can make significant strides in closing achievement gaps.
Like its successful predecessor in Framingham, the Milford initiative exceeded expectations.
40 sixth-grade students received over 750 hours of personalized math tutoring. The results were impressive: 47% of tutored students met their typical math growth goals, compared to 40% of their peers, and 29% reached their stretch goals, more than double the 14% among non-participants. The program also improved attendance, with participating students attending an average of two more school days than their peers. Wrap-around services, including snacks, late-bus service, and staffing stipends, helped drive this success.
