ARTbuilds MetroWest: Strengthening Arts and Community Connections

ARTbuilds MetroWest is an action project by the Community Foundation for MetroWest that supports local arts and culture organizations in reaching wider audiences, increasing accessibility, and sharing resources across the region. The project began with four pilot organizations: ArtSpace Maynard, Gems @ The Arts (Framingham), LexArt (Lexington), and Mother Brook Arts and Community Center (Dedham), and continues to support programs and initiatives that make the arts more accessible for all.

Listening to the Community

A big part of this action project is learning directly from the people these organizations serve. In 2025, the four pilot organizations surveyed their audiences, held conversations with artists, participants, and local partners, and collected feedback from events and workshops. They discovered that the community wants more youth programs, intergenerational activities, and ways to engage with the arts that fit their needs.

Programs and Achievements

Thanks to these conversations, each organization has launched or strengthened programs that reach new audiences and provide meaningful experiences:

  • ArtSpace Maynard created artist circles where local creatives can connect, share ideas, and collaborate. They also expanded outreach to bring in more members and provide low-cost options for participation.
  • Gems @ The Arts centered community voices in programming, making arts a tool for building trust, learning, and connection in Framingham.
  • LexArt launched a teen council, expanded partnerships with disability-focused and local arts organizations, and offers scholarships to ensure accessibility.
  • Mother Brook Arts and Community Center hosted open studios, workshops, and community events while building partnerships with schools, senior centers, and local businesses.

Supporting Ongoing Growth

ARTbuilds MetroWest is not just about supporting individual organizations; it’s about creating a stronger arts community across the region. The project continues to champion organizations that can serve as resource hubs for others, share knowledge, and offer space, expertise, or programming to the broader community. The Foundation also provides guidance, general operating support, and capacity-building resources to help organizations grow sustainably.
